How do we get our students more involved and interested in their learning process? That is the biggest question that today and future educators will continue to ask. One possible solution is allowing the students to voice their inner creativity and not confine them to prepackaged assignments. Another possible solution to help with this problem is to allow students to voice their opinions. In doing so we as educators have to actually listen and work with them through their problems.
Opening kids’ eyes to a more creative learning process can start in any classroom. Two simple and easy ways to help generate more creativity in your classroom is through podcasts and digital stories.
Using digital story telling can help your students tell their stories in a much more creative way. You can still have your students write, but balancing in digital storytelling can really improve their learning. For example you could have your students write their outline for the digital story in a paper format. Then they can begin to express their creativity through their own unique digital story. When using digital storytelling your students are going to have to learn how to use varies resources and apps. So not only are they learning how to write and develop a story, they are learning new techniques and processes in how to develop it.
The other process we are going to discuss is using podcasts in the classrooms. Using podcasts in an educational setting can be a great way to give your students a break from
reading their “boring” textbooks. One great way to use podcasts is to allocate 10 or 15 minutes a day to have them work on their listening skills and have them listen to an educational podcast series. So often educators have troubles with children listening, so why don’t we spend more time working on that skill? According to Linda Flanagan students “can listen 2-3 grades higher than their reading skills.” Podcasts allow students to practice their listening skills in an educational setting.
There are so many benefits to using digital storytelling and podcasts, but arguably the more important benefit is allowing them to use their creativity (if you haven’t picked up on the creativity part yet). There aren’t too many disadvantaged for using either one of these methods. However, the time that it requires possibly could be the biggest disadvantage. I think if you are open to allow students to use their own imagination and creativity, then it could help them express themselves to others. When reading and researching about podcasts and digital storytelling, I was most surprised by the fact that majority of students are able to listen at higher levels than their reading skills.
The biggest takeaway that I got and hope you do to is to allow your students to express themselves in their own unique way. That might be allowing them to listen to podcasts for various material, or allowing them to create a digital story that expresses their emotions and feelings through technology. All-in-all, we should all strive to keep an open mind in our teaching methods and leaning assessments.
